Brushstrokes of Light:
Exploring the Journey of Fine Art Oil Painting with Julie Brayton
Are You a Paint Party Painter or Serious About Honing A Skill?
Not everyone will want to make a career out of painting, but anyone can take the task of learning a new skill seriously. There are many reasons one would do this. Some seek to escape the chaotic world around them, while others challenge themselves and keep their brains active. Still, others find pure enjoyment in the process of learning and in seeing their improvement. I started at 13, as I’ve mentioned before. I became entranced with the challenge and process. I never grew tired of doing and redoing the same subject until I got it right. The first thing I did at 10 years old was copy from an old “how to draw animals” book.
There are many ways to execute a painting. For the most part, there aren’t too many ways that could be called wrong. It would depend on what you’re looking to achieve. Many painters promise to teach how to paint without requiring knowledge of drawing, potentially enabling a quick finish to a painting. If that’s all you’re looking for, great! My question is, how much do you really learn that way, allowing you to create paintings independently? Without the fundamentals, you are very limited in what you can create. Are you okay with that?
In the courses I teach, I start with fundamental steps, similar to learning the keys on a piano. This gives you the FREEDOM to paint whatever your heart desires! I always tell the story about a math book I had that started with naming numbers and progressed to algebra, with each step building on the next. You will never reach algebra without knowing how to add and subtract. The same applies here. If you love the process of learning and improving your skills, then you are in the right place.

My Why
My goal or mission is to bring reminders and connection to the importance each individual has through the connection to nature. How we all can honor the essence of who we have always been meant to be. Creativity, whether through collecting art or creating it, is a healing force that allows us to embrace, tell and own our stories in a transformative and ultimately joyful way.
