What Does Painting The Color Of Light Mean?
No Doubt you are familiar with Monet. Monet was on a mission to see directly how light affects the color of objects. He painted the haystacks at different times of day and year to see how the position of the sun affected the color. Nothing changed about the haystacks just the light. Those who paint in a more “Tonal” style are simply using “value”, the lightness or darkness of something to affect the lighting in a scene. This is also known as the,
Perceptual norms which are the “named” colors or otherwise known as the “local” colors such as green trees, blue sky etc.
So whether it’s a sunny day or a grey day, blacks, greys, and browns are used to indicate “Light”.
You will learn the method that uses color to depict light.
As such there are no blacks, greys or browns on the palette. Those “non-colors” are made with color where needed. Instead of flat dead space you achieve depth and vibrancy even in dark or grey areas of the scene. This result is a dynamic, vibrant painting that is still “realistic” whether detailed or impressionistic.
The upshot of all this is that local color as a simple reality is almost nonexistent.
Since Monet others have expounded on this concept and restructued some things so a painter looks for an initial impression of starting notes (colors) in the large mass shapes. This applies to anything light hits.
